Letter W
White rot

A form of fungal decay in trees. As the fungus consumes lignin and cellulose, the affected wood becomes pale or whitish while retaining its fibrous structure. Its strength is greatly reduced.

Witch’s egg

An immature egg- to spherical-shaped fruiting body surrounded by a thick gelatinous sheath in some gasteroid fungi (Phallaceae, Clathraceae), for example the stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus).
